Universal Studios VS Disney World: who has better on-site hotels?

Staying on-site can make or break a theme park trip. Iâve stayed at both Universal and Disney hotels, and the perks, pricing, and layout feel very different once youâre actually there.

This post is all about Universal Studios VS Disney World Orlando on-site hotels.

Disney World On-Site Resort Overview
If you thought Universal had a lot of hotels, wait until you see Disney’s offerings. Disney World has over 25 on-site accommodation options, amongst 4 categories:
- Value Resorts
- Moderate Resorts
- Deluxe Resorts
- Deluxe Villas
Here are the different resorts in each category:
- Disneyâs Art of Animation Resort
- Disneyâs Pop Century Resort
- Disneyâs All-Star Movies Resort
- Disneyâs All-Star Music Resort
- Disneyâs All-Star Sports Resort
- The Campsites at Disneyâs Fort Wilderness Resort (there’s no obvious category to put this one in, but this is the most suitable)
- Disneyâs Caribbean Beach Resort
- Disneyâs Port Orleans Resort â Riverside
- Disneyâs Port Orleans Resort â French Quarter
- Disneyâs Coronado Springs Resort
- Disneyâs Contemporary Resort
- Disneyâs Polynesian Village Resort
- Disneyâs Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
- Disneyâs Yacht Club Resort
- Disneyâs Beach Club ResortÂ
- Disneyâs Wilderness Lodge
- Disneyâs Boardwalk Inn
- Disneyâs Animal Kingdom Lodge
- Disneyâs Old Key West Resort
- Boulder Ridge Villas at Disneyâs Wilderness Lodge
- Disneyâs BoardWalk Villas
- Disneyâs Beach Club Villas
- Disneyâs Saratoga Springs Resort
- Disneyâs Animal Kingdom Villas â Jambo HouseÂ
- Disneyâs Animal Kingdom Villas â Kidani Village
- Bay Lake Tower at Disneyâs Contemporary Resort
- The Villas at Disneyâs Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
- Disneyâs Polynesian Villas & Bungalows
- Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disneyâs Wilderness Lodge
- Disneyâs Riviera Resort
- The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort
1) Early Park Entry: 30 Minutes at Disney vs. 60 Minutes at Universal
- Disney on-site hotels (and other select hotels) include Early Theme Park Entry, which is 30 minutes early access to all four parks, every day.
- Universal on-site hotels include Early Park Admission, which is usually 60 minutes early at at least one park daily (often Universal Studios Florida OR Universal Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe).
Pros and cons:
- Disneyâs 30 minutes helps you rope drop a couple of key rides, and it applies across all four parks.
- Universalâs extra hour is a bigger head start, which matters when lines spike fast.
2) Transportation: Disneyâs Web of Options vs. Universalâs Short Walks and Water Taxis
Getting around is a bigger story at Disney. The place is massive.
- Disney transportation includes buses, monorail, water taxis, and the Disney Skyliner. It connects resorts to all parks and Disney Springs, as well as the resorts.

- Universalâs footprint is compact. You often walk from hotels to CityWalk and the two main parks. Water taxis serve select hotels, and shuttles cover others. However, it is more spread out now that Epic Universe has opened (and isn’t within walking distance of the original two parks). Therefore, guests at lots of resorts (all but Universal Helios Grand and Universal Stella Nova) will need to use shuttle buses to get to Epic Universe.

3) Theming and Immersion: Storybook Worlds vs. Bold Adventure Vibes
The style of each resort brand shows up the second you step into the lobby.
- Disney leans into story. Think Animal Kingdom Lodge with savanna views, Polynesian Village with tiki nostalgia, and Art of Animationâs giant character icons.

- Universal pulls from travel and pop culture. Portofino Bay echoes an Italian seaside town, Royal Pacific has tropical vibes etc.

Why it matters:
- If you want your hotel to feel like part of the park day, Disneyâs theming reaches into every corner.
- If you prefer sleek, energetic spaces with strong pool scenes and modern rooms, Universal hits that brief.
This said, Disney’s newer hotels (Riviera in particular) isn’t as heavily themed as older resorts, like Wilderness Lodge.
So in the future, as Disney builds new hotels, the gap between theming may not be as stark.
4) Pricing Tiers and Value: Does Disney or Universal have the Cheapest Hotels?
Let’s compare the starting prices for 2026:
Disney’s Value Resorts VS Universal’s Prime Value and Value Inns & Suites
Disney Value Resorts: Prices start at around $149 per night at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort
Universal’s Prime Value Resorts: Prices start at around $134 per night Universal Stella Nova Resort & Universal Terra Luna Resort
Universal’s Value Inns & Suites: Prices start at around $99 per night at Universal Endless Summer Resort â Surfside Inn and Suites & Dockside Inn and Suites
Generally, Universal has some cheaper Value options but you can still get decent deals at Disney’s cheaper Value Resorts (the All-Star Resorts).
Disney’s Moderate Resorts VS Disney’s Deluxe Resorts VS Universal Signature Collection
Universal doesn’t have a Moderate Resort category, so I’m grouping all these categories together:
Disney’s Moderate Resorts: Starting at $294 approx. per night at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort
Disney’s Deluxe Resorts: Starting at around $576 per night at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Disney’s Deluxe Villas: Starting at around $180 per night for a Deluxe Studio at Disney’s Old Key West Resort (or starting at $161 at Animal Kingdom Villas in a Value Studio, but there’s less availability for these exact rooms). The prices are this low if you rent DVC points with an established company, like David’s Vacation Club Rentals.
Universal’s Signature Collection: Starting at $222 per night at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
Generally, Universal’s Signature Resorts can be similarly priced or sometimes cheaper than Disney’s Moderate Resorts, and they can be cheaper than Deluxe Resorts.
However, if you’re renting DVC points, you may be able to find cheaper options at Disney’s Deluxe DVC properties.
Overall, Universal often has better hotel rates, but this will also depend on discounts that are – or are not – offered when you book your trip.
5) Dining: Disneyâs Character Meals and Signature Spots vs. Universalâs Convenient, Lively Mix
Youâll eat well either way, but the formats differ.
- Disney resorts pack in table-service restaurants, lounges, buffets and iconic character meals. You can also find plenty of quick service locations here too.

- Universal resorts lean into quick-service convenience plus a few standout table-service spots.

Summary:
- Disney has more destination dining inside hotels, which can turn dinner into part of the show.
- Universal has less iconic dining locations, but you can always visit CityWalk (nearby for all hotels except those in the Epic Universe area) for more choices.

6) Disney VS Universal Pools and Recreation
Pool days look different across the two resorts.
- Disney’s resorts generally have more pools, some having several (all hotels except Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter have more than one pool). Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney Port Orleans Resort – Riverside have 6 pools each!
- On the other hand, many of the Universal hotels only have one pool (except Loews Portofino Bay Resort, with 3 pools and Universal Cabana Bay Resort with 2 pools).

Entertainment:
- Disney runs outdoor movies and campfires, with some low-key live entertainment at select resorts.
- Universal skews toward poolside games, upbeat music, and quick access to CityWalk for nightlife.
That said, you can check the current offerings when you visit, as there may be more activities than expected at your Universal or Disney resort!
See no. 13 on this list for more differences on pools!
7) Location and Park Proximity: Disneyâs Sprawl vs. Universalâs Compact Campus
This is the biggest day-to-day difference for me.
- Disney is vast. Depending on your hotel, travel times can vary a lot, even with all the free transport.
- Universal is tight. Many hotels are walkable, or a quick water taxi ride away. You save time and energy, which is gold with kids or short trips. Once again, this is different with Epic Universe, making Universal more spread out now. However, if you’re skipping Epic Universe and staying near the original parks, it will feel quite small and manageable.

8) Spas, Fitness, and Wellness: Disneyâs Full-Service Spas vs. Universalâs Gym-Forward Focus
- You can find a full-service spa at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa (other Disney resort spas haven’t re-opened since the 2020 closures), plus strong fitness centers across Deluxe Resorts and Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.
- Universal has solid gyms at each hotel (including the Value options). You can find the Mandara Spa at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel.
9) Christmas Decorations
Events change the vibe, the prices, and sometimes the crowds.
- Lots of Disney Parks and resorts go big on holiday decorations (all get decorations, but some are certainly better than others). The gingerbread displays at many Deluxe resorts are iconic.

- Universal’s parks and hotels get decorated for Christmas, but they’re generally more low key than most of Disney’s decorations.

10) No Universal Timeshare Program Like Disney Vacation Club
Universal doesnât offer a timeshare program like Disney Vacation Club, and thatâs a real difference.
DVC gives owners (who pay an upfront cost and annual dues) a set number of points to use at select resorts each year.
RELATED POST: Is Disney Vacation Club Worth It?: 8 Things To Consider Before Becoming a DVC Member
Universal keeps it simple, “pay as you go”, where you book hotels as normal whenever you’re planning to stay there.
Some will prefer the no-commitment Universal model, but DVCâs perks can tilt the value for those who can commit to frequent Disney stays.
Side note: You can stay at Disney resorts or rent DVC points WITHOUT becoming a Disney Vacation Club member.
11) Some Universal Hotels Provide Universal Express Pass Unlimited. No Disney Hotels Provide Free Lightning Lanes.
Hereâs a big split on value: some Universal premier hotels include Universal Express Pass Unlimited for every guest, from check-in through checkout. That perk wipes out many standby waits, which feels huge on busy days.

These 3 resorts include Universal Express Pass Unlimited in their room rates:
- Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando
- Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando
- Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando
RELATED POST: Universal Orlando Signature Resorts Ranked Worst to Best (price, amenities, Express Pass, location & more)
Over at Disney, no hotel gives you free Lightning Lanes. You would still need to pay for Lightning Lanes, even if you stay at the fanciest resorts.
If skipping lines is your priority, a Universal stay start to look like the smarter buy?
Side note: These Express Pass Unlimited only works at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure (not Universal Epic Universe and Universal Volcano Bay).
12) Disney Has Extended Evening Hours for Deluxe Resort Guests. Universal Doesn’t.
Disney gives Deluxe and Deluxe Villa guests Extended Evening Hours, usually two extra hours at a select park (often Magic Kingdom or Epcot, but occasionally at other parks) on limited nights.
Itâs a nice perk if you want late rides with lighter lines.
Universal doesnât offer a similar after-hours program for hotel guests.
But let’s remember that three Universal Signature resorts include free Unlimited Express for every guest, every day.
Which would you rather have, two hours twice a week or skip most lines all day?
For most families, Unlimited Express at Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, or Royal Pacific beats Disneyâs late nights on value and time saved.
13) Different Pool Hopping Rules
Staying on-site at Universal? You can pool hop at any on-site hotel, except for Endless Summer guests.
At Disney, it’s a different story. You can only use an on-site pool, if you’re staying at the resort it is located at.
However, there are slight exceptions to this:
- If you’re staying at an All-Star Resort, you can use ANY pool at ANY of the All-Star Resorts (Movies, Music and Sports).

- If you’re staying at a Port Orleans Resort, you can use ANY pool at EITHER of the resorts (Riverside and French Quarter).
- DVC members used to be able to pool hop at select pools at select times, but this has been suspended for years.
Quick Comparison
| Feature | Disney World On-Site Hotels | Universal Orlando On-Site Hotels |
|---|---|---|
| Early Entry | 30 minutes at all four parks, daily | 60 minutes at at least one park daily, often including Epic Universe and one of the original theme parks |
| Line-Skipping | Not included with hotel stay | Unlimited Express Pass included at 3 Premier hotels for two parks |
| Transportation | Buses, monorail, ferries, Skyliner, some walking paths | Walkable paths, water taxis, short shuttles |
| Resort Footprint | Lots of huge resorts (including most Value and Moderate Resorts and some DVC resorts, such as Disney’s Old Key West Resort & Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa) | Compact; many are quick to parks and even CityWalk |
