Epic Universe is Universal Orlando Resort’s new park, which opened on May 22nd, 2025, with five detailed lands and 11 rides.

The other is Disney World’s first theme park, packed with storytelling, characters, and the most famous castle fireworks on the planet.

Epic Universe is a fresh park built around a beautiful central hub called Celestial Park. From there, you branch into deeply themed lands, each with its own rides, shops, and food.

Here are the lands you’ll find at Epic Universe:

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic: This area centers on the Ministry of Magic, with a major dark ride that puts you right into the story. It is also based on The Fantastic Beasts movies.
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD: Brings in Mario Kart and Nintendo attractions, from slow rides to a moderately thrilling coaster – Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness!

Dark Universe: Leans into classic Universal Monsters with a two attractions. Don’t worry, it’s not TERRIFYING in Dark Universe, and is still family-friendly.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk: Invites families to meet dragons, enjoy a few rides, watch a lively show (The Untrainable Dragon), and more!
Celestial Park: The centrepoint of the park, with Stardust Racers (a dual-launch coaster) and Constellation Carousel. This is the only land where you won’t find any movie/video game IP. This is Epic Universe’s “equivalent” of Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom.

Magic Kingdom is pure Disney storytelling.

Think classic lands (including Main Street U.S.A., Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Liberty Square), upbeat music, and attractions that span generations.

Most rides skew family friendly, with a few coaster thrills sprinkled in.

It is the park of Peter Pan’s Flight, Jungle Cruise one-liners, Haunted Mansion tame “spookiness”, and Pirates of the Caribbean scents and songs.

The Happily Ever After fireworks over the castle are the closer you plan your whole day around.

Must-do rides at Epic Universe

Stardust Racers (Celestial Park) – for thrill-seekers: Dual-launch coaster with graceful aerial moments and high speed. Great for coaster fans and brave teens. For reference, if you’ve been on Jurassic World: Velocicoaster (at Universal Islands of Adventure), this is an arguably, slightly tamer version.

Constellation Carousel (Celestial Park): A gorgeous family ride with a dreamy vibe, which turns in figures of 8. It’s not the best ride at the park, but it is a unique and gorgeous carousel (and tends to have the lowest wait time at Epic Universe).
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (Dark Universe): Dr. Victoria Frankenstein makes a foolish decision to commence her family’s experiments, trying to take over the power of the monsters. And guess what? Things don’t go to plan. The ride is similar to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (at Universal Islands of Adventure), but is more modern, with slightly scarier theming (but is NOT full of jump scares. And it won’t be too scary for a lot of kids).
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk): A great family coaster – less thrilling than Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (at Universal Islands of Adventure), for example.

Must-do rides at Magic Kingdom

Space Mountain (Tomorrowland): Classic coaster in the dark. Rougher, still fun for older kids and nostalgic adults. This coaster does not go upside down.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Frontierland) (closed for refurbishment. Re-opening in 2026): An iconic family coaster. No inversions.
Haunted Mansion (Liberty Square): Creepy, clever, and quotable. A family-friendly haunted-house-style ride.
Pirates of the Caribbean (Adventureland): Boat ride with iconic animatronics and music.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (Frontierland): Formerly Splash Mountain. It doesn’t have the strongest storyline (it goes along the lines of: we’re planning a party, some filler scenes, we’re at a party. Tiana deserved better!). But it is a fun water ride with a super iconic drop, providing great views of the park).

The Untrainable Dragon (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk): a high-energy stage show with big effects, and most importantly, life-like dragons!

Cosmos Fountain Show (Celestial Park): A simple but cute show with water fountains and multi-colored lights.

Happily Ever After: The nighttime spectacular that earns the hype with crisp projections, nostalgic music, and actual emotion. And, massive fireworks, of course!
Carousel of Progress: A unique and iconic show, taking you through inventions over the last century to show you how we’ve progressed!

Magic Kingdom Tickets VS Epic Universe Tickets: The Difference in Price

One-day tickets at Magic Kingdom range in price, from approximately $149 + tax – $209 + tax, per person.

Similarly, one-day tickets at Epic Universe tend to cost around $139 – $199 + tax, per person.

So, you may save slightly at Epic Universe, but the ticket costs will be comparable at both parks.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass vs Universal Express Pass

Magic Kingdom uses Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass:

Premier Pass is by far the most expensive option, as it lets you ride all eligible Lightning Lane rides once in a day. How much do you pay for this privilege? $329 – $449 + tax, per person. And this is JUST for a day!
Multi Pass lets you pre-book return windows for many – but not all – rides once per day, subject to availability. At Magic Kingdom, this usually costs $20 – $45 + tax, per person. There are less rides to choose from with the Multi Pass than the Premier Pass. These rides have to be booked through the My Disney Experience app, so it isn’t the best system if you want to be spontaneous.
Single Pass covers premium rides one at a time for an extra fee. At Magic Kingdom, plan to target TRON and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train early, either with Multi Pass selections or by rope dropping. These can often cost $12 – $20 + tax, per person (depending on the day you visit, and the ride you choose – TRON generally being the most expensive).

Universal Epic Universe uses Express Pass:

Express lets you skip the regular line on all participating attractions, usually once per ride with Express. It varies drastically in price – from around $175 – $402 + tax, per person, per day. But one thing stays the same: it will ALWAYS be expensive.

Food and dining: themed bites, mobile order, and must-try treats

Epic Universe:

Two main table service locations: 1) Atlantic and 2) The Blue Dragon Pan at Celestial Park.
Mainly quick service and snack locations.

Magic Kingdom:

Lots of table service and quick service options
Character dining (at Cinderella’s Royal Table and Crystal Palace) is a big hit with kids – and adults – but book early.

Mobile Ordering Tips at Quick Service Locations at Epic Universe & Magic Kingdom:

Order early in the day for popular lunch windows.
At Universal, you can usually sit down at the table and your food will be brought to you. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been implemented at Disney, so you’ll have to go to the counter and collect it. That said, it still is a good and pretty straightforward system.

Which Park Should You Pick? A Simple Decision Guide

Families with little kids

If your kids love princesses, other characters, and gentle rides, pick Magic Kingdom first.

If your kids are into dragons, monsters, Harry Potter and Nintendo, Epic Universe can work, but check ride height requirements.

Teens, adults and thrill seekers

If you want speed, bold visuals, and modern ride systems, go Epic Universe.

Magic Kingdom has some thrilling roller coasters (such as Space Mountain and TRON) is a standout, but they don’t have inversions, and probably won’t be scary to roller coaster enthusiasts.

Which is better Magic Kingdom or Universal Studios Epic Universe Park?

Magic Kingdom is a more complete park, but it has been open since 1971, so has had time to expand.

Epic Universe is impressive, especially when you consider that it only opened in May 2025, but there’s certainly room and a need for expansion!

Overall, Magic Kingdom probably has the edge, but Epic Universe is pushing the boundaries more with immersive lands and ride technology.

How much time do I need at each park – Do you need more time at Epic Universe or Magic Kingdom?

Plan a full day for both. You will not do everything.

If you’re staying on-site, try and take advantage of early entry at the parks (30 minutes before other guests at Magic Kingdom, and one hour at Epic Universe).

Epic Universe Park is currently around 110 acres (though the land Universal bought for Epic Universe is 750 acres. Some of this land has been used for the three new on-site hotels: Grand Helios, Stella Nova and Terra Luna, and some is reserved for expansion).

Magic Kingdom Park is around 107 acres, though Walt Disney World is 25,000 acres (though only a third has been used for parks, resorts etc).

Will Epic Universe make Disney busier?

Will Epic Universe make Disney busier? Perhaps, since a shiny new park brings more travelers to Orlando, and many will split trips between Universal and Disney.

That said, Epic Universe may cause people to spend more time at Universal Orlando Resort, and less time at Walt Disney World.

In fact, some guests may skip Disney World altogether, and only visit Universal.

Luckily, you can rent DVC points through trusted companies like David’s Vacation Club Rentals and book a studio or villa at these resorts for far less than rack rates (sometimes even 50% + less):

More flexible or booking last minute? Check out the confirmed reservations (which can sometimes be even cheaper).

If you’re not a Disney Vacation Club member, or you don’t have enough points to cover a Disney trip, renting DVC points is my favorite way to stay at resorts in the Magic Kingdom area for a way more reasonable price!
