You’re not alone. They’re names are a little similar (ever heard people mix them up and say ‘Animal Wilderness Lodge?’!)

Both are standouts in the Disney Deluxe Resort category, but they’re quite different when it comes to theme, vibe, and location (despite being designed by the same architect, Peter Dominick).

And choosing between the two can be tough, especially when you’re forking over serious cash for a Disney stay.

Today, we’re discussing what actually sets these two resorts apart.

From atmosphere and views to dining and transportation, you’ll get a real sense of what fits your resort preferences.

This post is all about highlighting each important difference between Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge at Walt Disney World Resort.

Animal Kingdom Lodge: African Safari Adventure

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIMAL KINGDOM LODGE AND kidani village

Walking into Animal Kingdom Lodge feels like stepping onto a whole new continent (it’s hard to believe you’re still in Orlando!).

This place isn’t just slightly “Africa-inspired” (in the way that Disney’s Riviera Resort has very little true inspiration from the French and Italian Riviera).

Here is what you’ll find at Animal Kingdom Lodge theming-wise:

  • Vibrant African Art and Decor: The grand Animal Kingdom Lodge lobby displays hundreds of pieces of authentic African art. In fact, it’s home to one of the largest African art collections in the U.S.A.. You’ll see hand-carved masks, woven baskets, and towering sculptures everywhere you look.
  • Savanna and Wildlife Views: Here’s the real flex. The resort surrounds you with actual wildlife. If you book a savanna view (or your standard view room actually offers a partial savanna view), you can step out onto the balcony and you might see up to 30+ different species of animals.

What is the difference between Animal Kingdom Lodge and Villas at Disney World?

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas is a DVC property. There are two different buildings with DVC Studios and Villas – Jambo House (the main building at the resort) and Kidani Village.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIMAL KINGDOM
Deluxe Studio at Kidani Village

Animal Kingdom Lodge is the hotel-side of the resort.

You can stay at either without being a DVC member (by booking a DVC room by renting points for example, or through your travel agent or Disney directly).

The theming at Animal Kingdom Lodge continues through to the Animal Kingdom Villas.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge: Pacific Northwest Retreat

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIMAL KINGDOM LODGE Jambo House and Kidani Village

At Wilderness Lodge, it feels like you’ve landed in a secluded national park somewhere in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest—without actually leaving Florida!

  • Inspired by National Park Hotels – Disney’s Wilderness Lodge was inspired by a few incredible National Park hotels, which is probably why the theming feels so realistic!
  • Woodsy Decor: Everywhere you turn, the design leans rustic but never looks cheap. There’s a mix of natural wood, stone, and native artwork.

Disney Vacation Club at Wilderness Lodge

Wilderness Lodge is home to two DVC properties (Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge).

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIMAL KINGDOM LODGE AND villas

Copper Creek is located in the main building, whereas Boulder Ridge is another building closeby.

The theming is similar at both buildings and they compliment one another nicely (with Boulder Ridge essentially being a “scaled-down” version of the main building at Wilderness Lodge.

Key Theming & Atmosphere Difference Between Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom:

  • Both resorts are cozy with darker decor, but Animal Kingdom Lodge has the savanna and animals, whereas Wilderness Lodge makes you want to snuggle up by the fireplace!
