Anyone else wish the days of free transportation to and from Disney World hotels weren’t behind us?

A few years later, most of us want it back. Good news: that’s not completely impossible.

In fact, there’s at least 5 reasons why the Disney’s Magical Express bus may actually return!

So, let’s discuss and hope! 🤞

This post is all about the 5 main reasons why Disney’s Magical Express bus could return.

Disney’s Magical Express

Does Disney still do the Magical Express?

Wondering ‘is there a free shuttle from Orlando airport to Disney World?’

Sadly, no.

The Magical Express was launched in 2005, but was only in service for 17 years. That’s right, in 2021, Disney dropped the news that the Disney Magical Express (operated by Mears) would be gone by January 1, 2022.

What did Disney replace Magical Express with?

If you want to know ‘what is Disney using instead of Magical Express?’, you may be disappointed to hear it’s a now paid service provided by Mears.

Sadly, there’s no “free” Magical Express Disney replacement.

Which leaves a few main options:

  • Mears Connect (which costs $16 for guests over 10, $13 for guests ages 3-9 and free for children under 3 years old).
  • Rideshares (primarily Uber/Lyft)
  • Taxis
  • Private Car Service
  • Public Lynx Bus

5 Reasons That Disney’s Magical Express Could Return

1) If the Lower Attendance at Disney World is Sustained

There’s a lot of talk about low attendance at Disney World this summer (2025). Whether it’s due to Epic Universe, high costs, poor leadership decisions or the humidity, Disney doesn’t like empty parks and resorts.

Every empty queue and vacant hotel room means money left on the table.

If the crowds keep shrinking, Disney might have to swallow their pride and bring back the Magical Express.

The service was a huge selling point for guests who didn’t want to mess with rental cars or parking fees.

If attendance keeps sliding downwards, bringing back the Magical Express could be one of the “easy fixes” (or at least, a Band-Aid).

2) Losing Guests to Universal (or other Orlando Attractions)

Let’s be honest, Disney’s timing to get rid of Magical Express still feels like a huge mistake.

After all, Epic Universe (Universal Orlando’s third park) recently opened on May 22nd, 2025 – coinciding with Disney’s low attendance.

If Disney loses a significant number of guests to Universal (primarily as a result of Epic Universe), Disney will need a way to keep guests in the “Disney bubble” and away from their biggest competitor.

The convenience of Disney’s Magical Express was a good way to dissuade guests from leaving Disney property. So good that Disney may need to use it again.

There’s also a chance that Disney World guests will get distracted by other Orlando attractions (i.e. SeaWorld, Busch Gardens etc.). However, until these alternatives start creating premium experiences, Disney probably doesn’t need to worry about this.

Being better and more attractive than Universal should be one of Disney’s primary aims.

3) If On-Site Hotels Struggle from Disney Magical Express

Disney has over 25 on-site resorts. This is amazing for them, but only if they can consistently fill the rooms.

As crowds have declined recently, and Disney has been offering more room discounts, we can assume that less hotel rooms are getting booked.

Since COVID, Disney took away a lot of their on-site perks, such as free MagicBands and notably the Magical Express.

If Disney really struggles to fill a lot of their hotel rooms, it’s not a stretch to think that Disney may re-introduce some more perks to get more rooms booked!

4) To Encourage Non-Locals to Visit

The Disney Magical Express was never helpful to people who live close enough to Disney World to drive.

But those of us who live far enough away to fly (it would be pretty tough for me to drive across the Atlantic 😂), it could still be beneficial.

Traditionally, non-locals often spend more money when they’re at Walt Disney World, so they can be very valuable to Disney. This is partially because they often take longer vacations.

If the Magical Express encourages people to spend the beginning and end of their vacations at Disney World, they may be likely to stay in the Disney bubble for their entire trips – making Disney a lot more money.

5) Improve Brand Image

Let’s be honest, Disney’s brand image has taken a few hits in the last few years. From removing on-site perks (especially the Magic Express) to constantly raising prices (though the quality is wavering in some areas, especially when it comes to value), it’s hard to claim Disney is beloved by all right now.

With Universal being viewed as better value (and being known for valuing their customers more), Disney’s brand image looks especially negative.

Bringing back perks like Disney Magical Express would be an amazing way to repair their once perfect brand image.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Disney’s Magical Express

Do any Disney hotels offer free airport transportation now?

No Disney Resort hotels currently provide free airport transfers. All transportation options are paid.

How can I save money at an on-site Disney World resort?

Hotels at Disney World can get crazy expensive (especially if now that you’ve got to pay for transport to and from the airport!), so renting DVC points can be a great way to save money on your stay.

I recommend renting Disney Vacation Club points through a well-known company like David’s Vacation Club Rentals, then booking a studio or villa at a deluxe resort for far less (sometimes 50%+ less than directly with Disney). Renting DVC points often makes those rates drop below moderate prices.

You can request a specific reservation (dates, resort and room category), or book a confirmed reservation (pre-made and unable to be altered) – which can sometimes be even cheaper, especially when booking last-minute.

For more details, check out my previous post on renting points: Why Can You Save So Much Money if You Rent DVC Points? [Is it too good to be true?]

Disney may also offer discounts on hotels for your stays. The best discounts are often for Annual Passholders, but you may also find discounts if you are a member of the U.S. Military or have a Disney+ subscription, for example. Select discounts may apply to all.

Can I use Disney Resort buses or monorails to get to the airport?

No, Disney transportation like buses, monorails, boats and Skyliner only operate within Walt Disney World property. They don’t travel to or from the airport.

Can I still check my luggage at the hotel for my flight?

The Resort Airline Check-In service also ended in 2021. Now, you must bring your luggage to the airport and check it at your airline’s counter.

That said, since April 3rd, 2025, there has been an Airport Luggage Service for guests staying at a Disney Value Resort and flying with Southwest Airlines.

Is Magical Express returning in the future?

Disney has not announced any plans to bring back Magical Express or a similar free airport shuttle for resort guests. That said, it’s not a complete impossibility, especially if Disney World struggles.
