Is Universal Express Pass worth it? This seems to be the million-dollar question for those visiting Universal Orlando!Ā
Honestly, yes, it can be, but only if you buy the right version, get it the smart way, and use it strategically to make the most of your theme park day(s).Ā
When prices can start around $100 per person and climb way past that on busy dates, this is one of those add-ons that can feel either brilliant or wildly expensive for what it is.
And now that Express covers more of the rides people care about most, the math looks a lot better than it used to for a lot of visitors.
This post is all about the 9 ways you can make Universal Express Pass worth it.
Universal Express Pass Worth It?
What is Universal Express Pass?
Universal Express Pass is Universal Orlando’s skip-the-line option for select rides and attractions, so you can cut down on the usual wait times.Ā
It costs extra, and it doesn’t necessarily cover every ride or every park the same way.
What are the different types of Universal Express pass you can purchase, how do they work & and how much do they cost?Ā
Universal has 3 different Express options (excluding the option at Volcano Bay – this post is focused on Express Pass at the theme parks).Ā
The standard Universal Express Pass lets you skip the regular line once per participating attraction. This starts at $99.99 per person per day (but will usually exceed this).
Universal Express Unlimited does the same thing but as many times as you want on those rides. This starts at $129.99 per person per day, but like the regular Express Pass can and will cost (significantly) more a lot of the time.
You can also get multi-day Express Passes which can reduce the per-day cost of having Express Pass, but you can still expect to pay hundreds for multi-day Express Pass tickets (they generally donāt save a super considerable amount).
The newer Universal Express Now is different, because it’s an individual fast pass you buy in the park for a single ride, so if you want to skip the line again, you have to buy another one. Availability and prices may be subject to change. You can only view availability and pricing when you are in the park. Prices are often approximately $20 – $25, but as this is so new, itās likely that we havenāt yet seen the full range of the pricing. We can assume that pricing will be highest at peak times (think Christmas, New Year etc.) and lower on a regular Tuesday in September.
1) Start by getting Universal Express Pass without paying full price
If you’re trying to make Universal Express Pass worth it, step one is pretty obvious: don’t pay top dollar unless you absolutely have to.Ā
Express Passes are NOT cheap, so getting it at a better price can be the difference between getting it or spending your time in the standby queues.Ā
This is one of those add-ons where the same basic benefit can cost wildly different amounts depending on how you buy it, when you buy it, and what else you’re already paying for.
A hotel stay, an annual pass perk, or discounted price can change can make it make sense (more on all of these strategies throughout this post!)
2) Check whether your annual pass gives you a cheaper path to Express
Annual passes do not come with full-day Express included. And the three cheapest annual passes (Seasonal, Power and Preferred) provide no Express Passes at ANY TIME of day.
However, the big exception is the Premier Pass, which includes after-4 PM Express Pass at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Of course, you may only get a few hours with Express Pass. But if you typically only visit later in the day, or donāt mind waiting in standby lines until 4 PM, the Premier Pass may make sense for you. That said, the Premier Pass starts at $904.99 for entrance to Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure (or $789.99 for Florida residents).
Being a Universal Annual Passholder can also open the door to discounts (from food for upper tiers and hotel discounts for all) and better overall trip math.Ā
If you visit more than once, or you stack hotel and passholder savings well, an annual pass can still be one of the easiest ways to make Universal Express Pass feel worth it without buying it the expensive way every single time.

3) Use a Premier hotel stay to get free Express Unlimited
This is probably the single best-value move on the board, especially for families. If you stay at Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel, or Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, your stay includes free Universal Express Unlimited for the guests in the room at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. That perk alone can beat buying Express separately, sometimes by a lot.
If you are a party of three or four, for example, Express is pricing high on your dates, buying it outright for everyone can get ugly fast.Ā
A room at one of these hotels may cost less, or at least land close enough that the extra perks make it the smarter play. You’re not just buying a hotel stay. You’re buying shorter waits, less stress, and a day that feels way more usable.
All on-site Universal hotels also usually include Early Park Admission, which sweetens the deal even more. So now you’re getting early access and Express Unlimited. That combo can turn a packed park day into something much more manageable, especially if you want to knock out major rides early, and even have time to enjoy the Signature Collection hotel youāre staying at!

4) Pick the right pass, because not all Universal Express options are equal
This is where a lot of people accidentally blow the value. They hear “Express Pass,” assume it’s all basically the same, and buy whatever pops up first. It isn’t the same, though, and the difference matters a lot.
If you want Universal Express Pass to feel worth it, you need the version that matches how you want your visit to go.Ā
Are you trying to hit the big rides once and move on? Or are you the kind of person who rides VelociCoaster, then immediately wants to do it again? That answer changes what makes sense.
Do you just want to go on every ride once? The Standard Express will be fine.
Want to ride major attractions – like Hagridās Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure – more than once per day. Express Unlimited may be worth the splurge for you.
Happy to go with the flow and maybe get the odd individual Express Now here and there? And fine that you canāt plan or buy this ahead of time? Express Now may be a good option for you.Ā
5) Understand one park, park-to-park, and three-park options before you buy
Coverage matters just as much as pass type.Ā
You can buy Express for one park, two parks, or three parks.
A one-park Express Pass is totally fine if you’re just visiting one park per day
But if you’re doing both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, park-to-park coverage is often the better move. It gives you more attractions to spread that value across. If one park gets slammed, or if you finish your must-dos faster than expected, you don’t run out of useful ways to use the pass.
Now add Epic Universe to the mix. Express Passes here are especially expensive, starting at (but usually exceeding) $199.99 for a 1-day Express Pass.
Letās simplify it:
| Option | Best for | What to watch out for |
| One-park | A focused single-park day | Easy to outgrow if you want to park hop |
| Park-to-park | USF + IOA in one day or over multiple days | Usually the sweet spot for many visitors |
| Three-park | Trips that include Epic Universe | Costs more, and Epic does not have Unlimited (though this is subject to change, perhaps when the capacity issues have improved!) |
6) Remember that Express Passes finally cover most of the rides people care about most
This is a huge reason the pass can feel more worth it than it used to. If Express only helped with filler rides, the value argument would be a lot weaker.Ā
But when it covers major headliners, the pass starts pulling real weight.
I remember having Express Pass in 2024, and STILL having to wait in an unsurprisingly absurd line for Hagridās Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure! However, major rides like Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure and even Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at Epic Universe – improving the perceived value of Express Passes.
That said, don’t get sloppy here. Not every attraction uses Express, and the list can change.Ā
Here are the current exclusions:
- Dragon Racerās Rally – Epic Universe
- Horror Make-Up Show – Universal Studios Florida
- Ollivanders Wand Shop – Universal Studios Florida & Islands of Adventure
- Pteranodon Flyers – Islands of Adventure
7) Have a simple plan so Express saves time instead of just feeling convenient
This is the part people skip because they think Express will do all the work for them. It won’t. It will help a lot, sure, but if you walk in with no clue what you want to ride first, you’re still going to burn time wandering and backtracking.
You do not need some color-coded, minute-by-minute touring plan. You just need a short plan that keeps your day pointed in the right direction.Ā
8) Go in with a short ride priority list
Before you even scan into the park, know your must-dos. Not every ride matters equally, and not every Express use gives you the same value. If you’re trying to make Universal Express Pass worth it, this is where the math starts working in your favor.
A simple priority list by park is enough. Iāve learned that ride order isnāt as important if you have Express Pass.
If you donāt head straight to Hagridās at opening (or during Early Park Admission), donāt worry.
Iāve been able to go on it late morning in August with a less than 30 minute wait (when the standby was 1.5 – 2 hours). It was barely enough time to finish the Frozen Butterbeer we got for what we thought would be a lengthy wait!
Just know the rides you want to do and the lands they are located in. It will save you a lot of time and unnecessary steps!
9) Give yourself enough park time to use the pass on a lot of rides
This one sounds obvious, but people still get tripped up by it. Express cuts waits. It does not mean every attraction is a walk-on (especially the most popular attractions at Universal).
On a busy day, even the Express line can take time.Ā
I had an Express Pass during an early December weekend. The standby line for Jurassic World: VelociCoaster was 60 minutes, and I waited 30 minutes (including time to put belongings in a locker). Sure, I saved 30 minutes, which is great! But I still spent half an hour in line.
A full park day usually gives you a much better shot at real value. More hours means more rides, more chances to use the shorter line on attractions that matter, and less pressure to sprint through the day like you’re being chased. That’s when Express starts earning back its cost.
That said, you can also use an Express Pass to ābuy backā resort time. Want to spend an afternoon around the pool at your hotel? Have a productive morning with the help of Express, and then leave the park early and relax! Perhaps even visit the parks again later, to see a nighttime show or go on even more rides!
10) Still use Early Park Admission if you want to maximize your day
If you have Early Park Admission, use it. Seriously, don’t think of EPA and Express as competing perks. They’re a perfect pair.
You can usually use Express Passes during Early Park Admission (when a select few attractions are open one hour early for guests staying at a Universal hotel and select Annual Passholders: Preferred and Premier).
The combination of the two can mean more attractions that are practically walk-ons for you!
