Universal Studios Christmas Showdown: Universal Studios Hollywood VS Orlando [2025 Guide]

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS CHRISTMAS

It may be summer when I’m writing this, but Universal Studios Christmas celebrations really aren’t *that* far away.

Which leaves the question: is Universal Studios Hollywood or Orlando better at Christmas?

Both parks pack in holiday events, themed treats and entertainment. But which is better?

I visited the Universal Studios Christmas 2024 celebrations in Orlando and Hollywood, and discovered plenty of similarities and differences between the two.

Let’s discuss and decide whether you should visit Universal Orlando or Hollywood (or both or neither!) during the Christmas season.

This post is all about Universal Studios Christmas in Hollywood and Orlando.

Universal Studios Christmas

Does Universal do anything special for Christmas?

Yes, both Universal Orlando and Hollywood both have their fair share of festivities to celebrate the holidays!

But what exactly do they have to offer, and which is better?!

Universal Studios Christmas Hollywood Overview

Say what you want about the California weather—Universal Studios Hollywood still manages to feel festive.

The dates for 2025 are TBC, but Universal’s site shows that it will take place on ‘select dates in November – December’.

So, let’s discuss the main Universal Studios Christmas events and highlights here:

Does Harry Potter World do anything for Christmas at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Snow in Los Angeles? Not quite, but The Wizarding World of Harry Potter sure does a good job of making you believe it.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS CHRISTMAS time

Hogsmeade is covered in “snow” and is enhanced with decorations.

The main draw of The Wizarding World at Christmas is The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle – an 8-minute festive projection show.

Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Plaza is taken over for Grinchmas.

Here’s  what you can expect from Grinchmas in California:

  • Meet the Grinch and Max and get a cute holiday photo!
  • Storytime and Meet & Greet with Cindy-Lou Who (who reads How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss – and then you can meet this popular character!).
  • Watch the tree light up and witness the festive “snowfall”!
  • Send the Grinch a letter at the Who-ville Post Office – if you write to the Grinch about your good deeds, Universal Studios Hollywood will donate money to charity for each postcard that is sent.
  • See and meet Who-ville citizens.
  • And more.

Other Christmas Attractions at Universal Studios California:

  • SUPER NINTENDO WORLD decorations
  • Christmas merchandise in the shops (you’ll often find adorable Harry Potter merch this time of year!).
  • Limited-time festive treats
  • Universal CityWalk – a huge Christmas tree and lots of holiday shopping opportunities (and food options)!
  • And more.

Universal Orlando Christmas Overview

Universal Studios Orlando isn’t content to play second fiddle in the Universal Studios Christmas showdown.

There is SO much happening here during the holidays!

In 2025, the Universal Orlando Christmas dates are November 21st – December 31st, 2025.

Here are some of the holiday festivities you can experience in Florida:

Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s

Unlike Universal Studios Hollywood, Orlando has its own Christmas parade at Universal Studios Florida, with:

  • Giant balloons modeled on traditional Macy’s designs as well as exclusive Universal characters.
  • Huge, decked-out parade floats that roll by with Minions, DreamWorks characters, and more.
  • Santa even makes an appearance!

If I’m being completely honest, this parade isn’t nearly as good or polished as the Once Upon a Christmastime Parade at Walt Disney World, or the Christmas Fantasy Parade at Disneyland.

But if you’re going to Universal Orlando during the holidays anyway, you might as well watch the cute parade whilst you’re there.

This post provides more details on this parade.

Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Orlando

Christmas in The Wizarding World in Orlando is also amazing, because:

  • The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle projection show is also in Hogsmeade – Universal Islands of Adventure.
  • There are musical performances by the Frog Choir (in Hogsmeade) and Celestina Warbeck (Diagon Alley’s jazz queen).
  • Both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley are decorated for Christmas (we don’t know what The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe will do for Christmas 2025 yet).

  • Seasonal shopping – Wizarding souvenirs get even more exciting at Christmas!

Grinchmas and Seuss Landing

Orlando’s take on Grinchmas is very bold and bright, with:

  • The Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular is a live musical show starring The Grinch and citizens of Who-ville (and even Max!). It’s not just for kids—grownups love it, too (I’ve never watched The Grinch movies, but I still enjoy this show!).
  • Unique Seuss Landing festive decorations
  • Meet The Grinch (beware: lines get very long – 3 hour wait times are not uncommon).
  • The Grinch Character Breakfast is a paid-option for meeting The Grinch without crazy wait times. Reservations sell out fast, so keep checking Universal’s site if you’re desperate to book this.
  • And more.

Resort-Wide Decor, Dining, and Special Events

  • Decorations spread far beyond the gates. Hotels roll out themed trees, miles of garland, and even interactive lobby installs.
  • Specialty dining with limited edition Christmassy food and drinks to try!
  • Shopping steps up for the season, with seasonal merchandise covering everything from plushes in Christmas outfits to holiday mugs and more. The best place to browse is The Holiday Tribute Store (the pop-up Christmas store in Universal Studios Florida).
  • The Universal Holiday Tour and other VIP experiences let you skip lines for the big shows and parades, plus get backstage meet-and-greets.
  • Decorations at Universal Studios Orlando on-site hotels.

Tips for Planning the Best Universal Studios Christmas Visit

Booking, Tickets, and Reservations for Universal at Christmas

  • If you know you definitely want to visit Universal at Christmas, and you’ve chosen your date(s), it’s best to get your tickets early – especially if you’re going at peak times (i.e. Thanksgiving and the week of Christmas). Shop around the different authorized ticket sellers (as well as Universal’s website) before purchasing to find the best deals (I usually check a few websites including Undercover Tourist and Attraction Tickets.
  • Special events and dining: If you’ve got your sights set on upcharge events like the Grinch Character Breakfast in Orlando as early as possible.
  • Best days to visit: Skip weekends and school holiday weeks if you hate crowds. I visited Universal Orlando at the weekend in early December, and crowds were quite high. In contrast, I visited Universal Studios Hollywood on weekdays in early-mid December and crowds were surprisingly low.
  • Stay nearby for convenience and perks: Staying at an on-site hotel at Universal Orlando gets you free transportation and an extra hour in the parks before off-site guests. If you’re going to Universal Studios Hollywood, it’s great to stay at hotels within walking distance of the park (such as the Sheraton Universal Hotel or Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City).

Navigating Crowds and Maximizing Festivities at Universal Studios During Christmas

  • Arrive early for a productive park day: Nothing beats being at the gate as the park opens. You might want to consider splurging on Early Entry (more details in this post).
  • Download the official app: Great for checking show/parade times and mobile ordering food to save time!
  • Plan your must-sees first: Decide what’s non-negotiable—maybe it’s the Macy’s Parade in Orlando or Grinchmas in Hollywood – so you don’t miss it!
  • Parade and show strategy: For a great spot for the parade at Universal Orlando, you’ll want to arrive at least 30 minutes early (or later, if you don’t mind a more obstructed view). It’s often recommended that you start waiting in line 15-40 minutes before the start of the Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular show.
  • Logistics: Don’t bring a giant bag or you’ll spend too much time in security lines (and it may not fit in all the free lockers when you go on rides. See more details on this for Orlando and Hollywood.).

Which is Better at Christmas: Universal Studios Orlando or Hollywood?

Let’s be honest, both Universal parks are great during the holidays, but there’s a clear winner if you want the more “over-the-top” celebrations. Orlando pulls out all the stops with bigger, flashier celebrations, from the parade to the massive Grinchmas makeover in Seuss Landing, and more.

Hollywood tries, and succeeds at being festive, but certainly has less Christmas events and attractions to offer (which isn’t surprising as there’s only one park in Hollywood, compared to the three theme parks in Orlando – since the opening of Universal Epic Universe).

For a shorter trip, Universal Studios Hollywood is great, as you can get all the festivities done in just a day or two – without feeling overwhelmed.

If you want a slightly slower vacation, Universal Orlando is the better option – as you could easily spend a few days there enjoying the Christmas celebrations.

Frequently Asked Questions about Universal Studios Christmas

Is Universal Studios open on Christmas Day?

Universal Studios Orlando and Hollywood are open on Christmas Day (but be aware that crowds can be large on this major holiday). Prices for tickets and hotels can be very high too.

Is Grinchmas at Universal worth it?

If you love Dr. Seuss, silly photo ops, shows, characters and decorations, absolutely!

Even if you know nothing about The Grinch (like me, prior to Christmas 2024), Grinchmas at both parks is a lot of fun.

Do you need a special ticket for Grinchmas?

No, you’ll just need a valid theme park ticket or Annual Pass to go to Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood or Orlando.

Final Thoughts & Ta Ta For Now

Picking the best Universal Studios Christmas comes down to what you want most from a holiday trip.

For a more low-key visit, Universal Studios Hollywood is worth considering. For more parks and choice, Orlando is the better choice.

But the real answer? There’s no “wrong” choice for Universal Studios Christmas. Either option is incredible at Christmas!
