Epic Universe VS Universal Studios Original Parks – Do You Need to Visit All 3 Universal Orlando Parks?

EPIC UNIVERSE VS UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

When considering Epic Universe VS Universal Studios Orlando OG parks, it’s easy to wonder if it’s worth your time and money to visit all three.

epic universe vs universal studios

Epic Universe just opened in May 2025, and appears to be disrupting the theme park industry in Orlando (more data likely available to show the extent when we get approximate attendance numbers in May 2026 and beyond).

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure are the beloved 1990s Universal Parks, but this shiny new park has everyone asking the same thing.

Do you need to visit all three to get the full experience?

Short answer, not always, but it depends on what you want out of your trip.

This summer, I visited Universal Epic Universe for the first time. I also helped some family members plan a one-day trip to Universal, and had to advise them on which park(s) to prioritize (more advice on this later in this post). So, it’s safe to say I’ve spent a lot of time the last couple of months thinking and comparing the three Universal Orlando Resort parks!

Here’s how I’m breaking it down: I’ll share quick park overviews, the key differences that actually matter, and practical advice on tickets, timing, and how many days you really need.

Ready to make smart choices and skip the mediocre time-wasters at Universal?

Let’s sort what deserves your time, what can wait, and when all three parks are worth the splurge.

This post is all about Epic Universe VS Universal Studios Florida original parks, and determining: do you need to visit all 3 Universal Orlando parks?

Epic Universe VS Universal Studios

A Quick Look at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure

Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, Islands of Adventure followed in 1999, and they’re still amazing for nostalgia and classic Universal fun.

With park-to-park and multi-day tickets, hopping between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is easy and still a highlight.

Since Epic Universe joined the party in 2025, attendance doesn’t appear to have fallen notably (perhaps in part to Epic Universe tickets initially only being available with certain multi-day tickets including the OG parks).

Universal Studios Florida: Classic Movie Magic for All Ages

EPIC UNIVERSE VS UNIVERSAL STUDIOS Orlando

This is the ā€œbehind-the-scenes of movie-makingā€ park with streets that mirror New York and San Francisco, plus plenty of well-known movies/shows.

  • Headliners: Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, E.T. Adventure, The Simpsons Ride, and live shows like Animal Actors and the Bourne Stuntacular. Illumination’s Minion Land adds snacks, photo ops, and playful chaos that keeps kids moving. See the current lineup on the official page for Universal Studios Florida attractions.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley: Universal Studios Florida is home to the second Orlando Harry Potter land – with one ride (Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts), along with shops, dining and Butterbeer locations.

RELATED POST: Diagon Alley VS Hogsmeade: Which Universal Studios Orlando Land is Better?

  • Atmosphere: A backlot vibe, complete with facades and sometimes even street performers.
  • Families win: Character meet-and-greets and kid-friendly IPs – found in Minion Land and Dreamworks Land, for example.
  • Lots of Screen-Based Attractions:Ā A common (and valid) critique of this land is that LOTS of the rides are partially/fully reliant on screens. If you prefer physical sets and animatronics, you won’t find that many at Universal Studios Florida.

Universal Islands of Adventure: Thrills and Immersive Worlds Await

Islands is generally thought to be the more thrilling of the 2 OG Orlando parks. It is built for exploration, with headliners spaced across beautiful walkways and water views.

  • Signature rides: Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is pure joy, part coaster, part story. Jurassic World VelociCoaster is the most thrilling coaster with inversions – being both smooth, and relentless. Though less impressive, you can also find The Incredible Hulk Coaster (another coaster that goes upside down).
  • Full-day value: You can fill a day with coasters, shows, and slow exploration (particularly if you don’t splurge on Express Pass – Universal’s paid FastPass system).

  • Kid-Friendly Land: Seuss Landing is bright and whimsical for younger kids – with 4 rides!
  • The OG Harry Potter Land: The Wizarding World at Hogsmeade delivers snowy rooftops, rides, shops, dining and Butterbeer locations and 3 rides that actually feel magical. Oh, and we can’t forget Hogwarts castle!

EPIC UNIVERSE VS UNIVERSAL

  • Simple & Entertaining Park Hopping: With park-to-park, the Hogwarts Express connects Hogsmeade to Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida, a must if you want the full Harry Potter journey.

Is Epic Universe open?

Epic Universe is the newest park at Universal Orlando Resort.

The Universal Epic Universe opening date was May 22nd, 2025.

What else should you know about Epic Universe?

It feels immediately modern from the moment you enter. The layout is clean and simple, with a gleaming hub and portals that pull you into multiple distinct worlds:

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
  • SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
  • Dark Universe
  • How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

(Celestial Park is the fifth land, and acts as the “center” of the park).

The rides aim for immersion first, then scale, so story and tech work together instead of competing. (That said, not all rides are worth the hype, as I discussed in my recent post: 10 Most Surprising Things about the Universal Epic Universe Park [for better & worse].

Epic Universe tickets only allow you access to this park for the day, instead of being park-to-park tickets.

Is Epic Universe Different than Universal Studios? How Is It Similar?

Here is a quick snapshot of the most notable differences when looking at Epic Universe compared to Universal OG Parks:

  • Theme footprint: Epic’s hub-and-portals layout is sleek and open. Studios and Islands are denser with classic street layouts and scenic loops.
  • Attractions mix: Epic packs fresh tech and new IPs (you can’t find Nintendo or How to Train Your Dragon rides at other Universal Orlando parks, for example). Studios and Islands bring proven hits (i.e. Jurassic Park/World, Minions etc.). and more shows (more so at Universal Studios Florida).
  • Ride intensity: Islands still claims the most intense coasters. Epic Universe rides mainly consist of a mix of coasters (most being moderately thrilling) and dark/slow rides. Studios leans friendlier for mixed ages with mainly low-intensity screen-based attractions.

Epic Universe VS Universal Studios Size: How big is Epic Universe compared to Universal Studios Orlando?

Epic’s footprint is no joke. The main park area is about 110 acres, similar to Islands, while the full development with support areas spans far larger. For quick context, local reporting pegs the main park at 110 acres across five distinct worlds, which tracks with what you see in person. If you want a source, this overview from WESH breaks down the numbers clearly: How big is Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida?

Here is how they stack up on size.

Universal ParkApprox. SizeWhat The Park Feels Like
Epic Universe110 acres (main park) – 750 acres in total, including 3 Epic Universe hotels & future expansion plotsSpacious!
Islands of AdventureApprox 110 acresLong, scenic loop around the park
Universal Studios FloridaApprox 108 acresNot noticeably smaller than the other Universal parks

When you’re in the parks, they feel like pretty similar sizes – however, some parks may deal with crowds better than others.

Capacity of Epic Universe VS Universal Studios

Common Trends at Universal Orlando Parks:

  • Epic: 11 rides at opening, and 5 lands for people to explore but often seeing long (sometimes potentially inflated) wait times. Universal may be capping attendance, but still feels busy (pretty inevitable as this is a very hyped new premium theme park in Orlando!).
  • Islands: ALMOST ALWAYS the longest line at Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventures, with the rest of the rides in the parks often being low-ish to moderate. During the holidays, there are LONG waits to meet The Grinch (when I visited during a weekend in early December 2024, the wait time was 180 minutes to meet him!).
  • Studios: Lines move – longer lines often found in Diagon Alley (Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts). Wait times may increase as Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit closed permanently in August 2025, and the replacement has not been officially announced yet – and we probably won’t have an opening date in the foreseeable future. With one less coaster, wait times will likely be higher at the other attractions at Universal Studios Florida in the next 1-2 ish years.

Epic Universe or Universal Studios Older Parks: Which Has Better Theming & Attractions?

Each park has a distinct identity. Here is how the themes and key attractions break down without repeating headliners.

  • Universal Studios Florida, Hollywood backlot energy
    • Theming: New York and San Francisco streets, shows, and characters.
    • Key attractions: Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, E.T. Adventure (the only Opening Day ride still at Universal Orlando), Revenge of the Mummy, The Simpsons Ride, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem etc.
    • Vibe: Great for families, more show options, low on roller coasters (especially since Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit closed).

universal EPIC UNIVERSE cost

  • Islands of Adventure, fantasy lands built for spectacle
    • Theming: Hogsmeade, Jurassic Park/World, Comics, Children’s stories
    • Key attractions: Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, the three water rides (Jurassic Park River Adventure, Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls and Popeye & Pluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges).
    • Vibe: The coaster capital, with theming based on books and comics.

EPIC UNIVERSE VS UNIVERSAL STUDIOS Florida

  • Epic Universe, innovative worlds with new IPs
    • Theming: Central Celestial Park hub with portals to Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, Isle of Berk, and the Ministry of Magic.
    • Key attractions: Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry (see this post for my unpopular critiques of this attraction), Mario-Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.
    • Vibe: Next-gen immersion with wider lanes and smoother navigation.

epic universe or universal.

Similarities that matter:

  • Harry Potter across parks: Diagon Alley lives at Studios, Hogsmeade and Forbidden Journey are in Islands, and Epic delivers a new Ministry chapter. That’s right: EVERY Universal Park has its own Harry Potter land (so wherever you go, Potterheads are welcome!).

RELATED POST: How much does it cost to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort?

  • Ride intensity range: Islands hits the hardest when it comes to thrills, Epic balances family and teens/young adults, Studios leans all-ages friendly with shows and characters.

Universal Epic Universe Cost VS Original Universal Parks Pricing

Ticket math got trickier from 2025. Epic’s single-day pricing trends tends than a one-park day at the original two, and the base Epic ticket does not include hopping. The classic bundle, park-to-park between Studios and Islands, still offers solid value if you want Hogwarts Express and a flexible day.

Quick planning notes I use:

  • Best value for all three: A multi-day, multi-park ticket. It spreads cost and gives breathing room.
  • Epic-only day: Expect a higher single-day price (though they can be cheaper for Universal Passholders). Speaking of …
  • Season/Annual Pass Access:Ā Access to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure is included with all season/annual passes at Universal. So, if you’re planning on visiting quite frequently in the next 12 months, it can be a great option. Sadly, there is no Annual Pass option or add-on for Epic Universe. Yet.
  • Express Pass: Prices swing with demand and can get crazy expensive on peak days. I buy it if I have one day or I am going during holidays. Express Pass can be more reasonable at the original two parks – especially as they are included with select Universal hotel stays.

If you are comparing your Universal budget against the price of a Walt Disney World visit this year, this piece helps frame the trade-offs: Universal vs Disney World comparison including Epic Universe.

Who Each Universal Park Suits Best?

  • Epic Universe: First-timers and families who want new IPs. After all, it’s always fun to explore a brand new park!
  • Universal Islands of Adventure: Coaster fans, teens, and adults who are looking for the biggest thrills.
  • Universal Studios Florida: Families with younger kids, character lovers, and groups who prefer shows and don’t mind lots of screen-based attractions.

Do You Need to Visit All Three Universal Parks? My Honest Recommendations

Short answer, you do not need all three parks for a great trip.

If time is tight, pick one or two to explore more “properly” and enjoy it without feeling like you’re trying to cram too much in.

If you want the full picture of Epic Universe VS Universal Studios, all three make a complete story. You get the newest tech at Epic, the big coasters at Islands, and the classic movie park vibe at Studios. I plan based on interests, budget, and how many days I have. That formula keeps the FOMO in check and the trip fun.

The Bottom-Line Take

If you are choosing fast, here is the honest split I use.

  • Not essential: You can have an amazing time with even just the two original parks (As I mentioned in the intro, I helped plan a Universal day trip with some family who hadn’t visited before. We visited the two OG parks with Express Passes, and everyone had a great time – without feeling like we were missing out by not visiting Epic Universe (and this was less than a week after my first visit to Epic!). Some of the best Universal attractions of all time are located at the older parks, and plenty of them still hold up in the age of Epic Universe.
  • Ideal when time allows: All three if you want the full Universal mix. I would recommend 2-3+ day trips being ideal if you want to visit all 3 parks

For a smart counterpoint on skipping Epic on shorter trips, this take is worth a skim: Why You Should Skip Epic Universe. I do not always agree, but the reasoning helps frame priorities.

Pro Tips That Save Time and Stress

These are the moves that change the feel of the trip.

  • Stay on-site with Early Park Admission. On-site guests can enter any of the three theme parks one hour before other visitors.
  • Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before posted opening. Early rides set the tone and take pressure off the afternoon.
  • Park-to-park pays off if you want to experience Hogwarts Express (between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure) or you plan short afternoons that pivot to evenings in a second park.

When All Three Universal Parks Are a Clear Yes

I tell friends to do all three when:

  • You visit every few years and want the full 2026 slate.
  • Your group splits on interests, like coasters and characters.
  • You care about new IPs and do not want to wait for a future trip!
