Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom Theme Park – which is better?

Epic Universe is the shiny new park in Orlando. Disneyâs Animal Kingdom is the youngest theme park at Walt Disney World favorite with – safari and âun-theme-park-likeâ atmosphere.Â
But if youâre short on time or only want to visit one, which should you visit?
In this post, I am breaking down the most important points of comparison, so you can decide the best theme park for you to visit!
This post is all about Universal Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom Theme Park – which is the better Orlando park?
Â
Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom
Â
What is Universal Epic Universe?
Epic Universe is Universal Orlando Resortâs newest theme park, which officially opened on May 22, 2025.Â

Where Epic Universe fits in Universal Orlando (and why it feels different)
Epic Universe is the third theme park at Universal Orlando Resort (separate from Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure).Â
Â
The âhub and portalsâ layout: Celestial Park explained
Epic Universe is organized around a central hub called Celestial Park, and itâs not just a basic entry street. Itâs a full land with its own attractions and dining.Â
From there, you enter the other worlds through portals, making you feel like youâre stepping in and out of different movies.
Â
The five worlds inside Epic Universe (quick, clear rundown)
Epic Universe has five themed worlds, each built around a different franchise or concept. Hereâs what youâre walking into:
- Celestial Park: As we established, this is the âcentral hubâ
- Dark Universe: Universal Classic Monsters, and spooky village vibe.Â
- How to Train Your Dragon, Isle of Berk: A colorful, family-friendly world that leans into big character moments, and kinetic rides.
- Super Nintendo World: Bright, interactive, and packed with game-like details.
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Ministry of Magic: A fresh Wizarding World entry built around the Fantastic Beast movies and Ministry concept, with a different tone than Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. The land takes you into Wizarding Paris, and truly can be appreciated by Potter fans and non-fans alike.

Â
What is Disneyâs Animal Kingdom Theme Park?
Disneyâs Animal Kingdom is Walt Disney Worldâs nature-forward park, which opened in 1998.
It feels less like a ârides all dayâ checklist and more like a living place.Â
It mixes a modern zoo, big themed lands, and a handful of truly elite attractions.Â
The coolest thing about Animal Kingdom is that you can go from watching giraffes roam to flying on a banshee, to watching an incredible street or stage show.Â

What makes Animal Kingdom different from the other Disney parks
Animal Kingdom doesnât run on castle vibes or classic nostalgia. It runs on detail, sound, and space. Itâs the most âwalk around and take it inâ park Disney has, and thatâs a compliment.
A few things stand out the minute I walk in:
- Itâs built like a real, “worn-in” environment, not just a pretty street with shops.
- Animals are an integral part of the day, not a side exhibit you stumble into.
- The pace is slower, even when the crowds are not.
Â
The parkâs âlandsâ (and what you do in each one)
Animal Kingdom is divided into areas that feel like regions rather than just theme park lands.Â
Hereâs the quick, useful snapshot:
- Oasis: The entrance area, with animal exhibits right away (itâs a calm opener). Also known for being the location where you’ll find the Rainforest CafĂŠ – and a Joffrey’s stand, perfect for a rope drop morning caffeine fix!
- Discovery Island: Home to the park icon, the Tree of Life, plus paths and the parkâs central hub energy.
- Africa: This is where youâll find the safari, plus the very popular show, The Festival of The Lion King.
- Asia: Big scenery, home to the iconic Expedition Everest, and some of Animal Kingdomâs most popular rides.
- DinoLand U.S.A.: A dinosaur themed land, which is sadly closing permanently on February 2nd, 2o26.
- Pandora, The World of Avatar: The gorgeous and newest land at Animal Kingdom, which opened in 2017 – home to the park’s extremely popular ride, Avatar Flight of Passage.
Â
Â
Size of the Parks: Is Epic Universe bigger than Animal Kingdom?
If you’ve ever visited – or read reviews – of these two parks, you’ll probably know that they’re big, and therefore, exhausting to visit!
The tricky part is that âsizeâ of these two parks can mean a few different things, like total property, guest space, or how much ground you actually cover in a day.
Let’s discuss further …
Â
Epic Universeâs size (park vs full development)
Epic Universe gets talked about like itâs massive because itâs new, shiny, and built with huge sightlines. Size-wise, the theme park itself takes up 110 acres.
Thereâs also a separate, much larger number that gets tossed around a lot: the entire Epic Universe development.Â
Said larger figure includes things you donât experience like a âpark,â such as the resorts and future areas for development etc. In total, the Epic Universe plot of land is an impressive 750 acres.
Â
Animal Kingdomâs âbigâ factor is how it uses space
Animal Kingdom Park takes up over 500 acres.
But with Animal Kingdom, the question isnât just âhow many acres,â itâs what are those acres doing?
Animal Kingdom is built around:
- Large animal habitats, which naturally eat up space.
- Trails and viewing areas, which stretch your day without feeling like a straight shot from ride to ride.
- Wide, shaded walkways, which makes it feel less cramped even on busy days.
Â
Why Epic can feel big, even if your route is efficient
Epic Universe is designed like a highlight reel. The portal entrances and âseparate worldsâ layout makes each area feel like its own destination, which can mentally register as bigger than it is.
A few reasons I think Epicâs size feels amplified:
- Big visual transitions (portal to portal), so it feels like you traveled farther.
- Wide open hub space in Celestial Park, where you can see a lot at once.
- Dense clusters of things to do, so youâre not wandering long stretches with nothing happening.
In other words, Epic can feel like a big park because itâs packed and designed to keep you switching gears.
Â
So, which park feels bigger?
If you mean âbiggerâ as in how it feels when youâre actually there, this is my honest take:
- Animal Kingdom feels bigger when you slow down for trails, animals, and atmosphere. Itâs a park that stretches time.
- Epic Universe feels bigger if you’re constantly walking in and out of portals, because each world is essentially its own mini-universe. So it keeps resetting your sense of scale.
If we’re talking about just the theme parks based on the figures, Animal Kingdom wins. But it doesn’t necessarily feel bigger than Epic Universe. Just different.
Â
Â
Theming: Animal Kingdom VS Epic Universe
Both Animal Kingdom and Epic Universe are immersive, but they use totally different tricks to get you there.
Â
Animal Kingdomâs theming feels lived-inÂ
Animal Kingdomâs best âmagicâ is how un-theme-park it can feel.Â
The trails, the plants (perhaps excluding the “perfectly-carved” Tree of Life), and the worn textures. Most of the park is purposely imperfect, which makes it feel so believable.Â
A couple key points about the theming at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park
- A real sense of place, as if you’re going to a market or a research outpost.
- Nature does the heavy lifting, because live animals and real landscaping raise the bar for everything around them.
One of the parkâs key themes is conservation. The park generally leans into respect for nature instead of treating it like a prop.
Itâs not preachy, itâs more like a steady background message: this stuff matters. That tone is a big reason Animal Kingdom hits differently than other parks in Orlando.
Â
Epic Universe is clean, bold, and built for âwowâ moments
Epicâs Universe’s portals make each world feel sealed off, so the switch is instant and dramatic.

You may notice bigger icons and brighter colors, especially compared to Animal Kingdomâs earthy style.
Epic Universe feels more perfected, and almost too flawless to feel “realistic” (not a bad thing in a theme park that is supposed to transport you to something you don’t see in real life).Â
Â
Which park has better theming?
It depends on what kind of immersion you want.
- If I want theming that feels real and grounded, Animal Kingdom wins because it gets out of its own way.
- If I want theming that feels big and unmistakably ânew parkâ, Epic Universe wins because it commits hard to the bit.
But overall, I have to say that Epic Universe wins for theming.
With the new Tropical Americas area coming to Animal Kingdom, which is meant to open in 2027, it is straying from the key theming of Animal Kingdom. Instead, it appears to be more focused on Disney IP, such as Indiana Jones and Encanto.
Whilst we haven’t seen the land yet, it doesn’t feel like a very animal-centric land.
Although Epic Universe is full of different themes, all the lands are supposed to feel very different from one another. And this is executed very well by Universal’s newest park.
Â
Â
Does Epic Universe or Animal Kingdom Have Better Rides and Attractions?
Â
Epic Universe Highlights in 2025: big thrills, big tech, big themes
Despite only opening in 2025, Epic Universe has 11 rides, including:
- Constellation Carousel (yep, itâs a classic carousel) at Celestial Park
- Curse of the Werewolf (roller coaster) in Dark Universe
- Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness (a family-friendly coaster) in Super Nintendo World
- Dragon Racer’s Rally at How to Train Your Dragon, Isle of Berk
- Fyre Drill (water ride) at How to Train Your Dragon, Isle of Berk
- Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry (a dark ride) in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
- Hiccupâs Wing Gliders (family coaster) at How to Train Your Dragon, Isle of Berk
- Mario Kart: Bowserâs Challenge (a dark ride with video game style competition) in Super Nintendo World
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (a dark ride that uses a similar system to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal Islands of Adventure) in Dark Universe
- Stardust Racers (roller coaster) in Celestial Park
- Yoshi’s Adventure (a slow-paced ride) in Super Nintendo World
Â
They also have 2 stage shows, including:
- Le Cirque Arcanus at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
- The Untrainable Dragon at How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Â
Hereâs what Epic is winning on right now:
- Modern dark rides that feel âbuilt in this decadeâ: Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is the poster child. Itâs story-forward, itâs intense, and it leans on big effects and big creature moments.
- Major animatronics and big set pieces: Universal has started to utilize animatronics more than usual in Epic Universe. From Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment to Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, there are some impressive animatronics at this Universal park. This is impressive considering Universal has been known for their over-reliance on screens in many of their attractions in the last 15+ years.
- Coasters that are a main event: Whilst not being the most coaster-heavy park, the “dueling” coaster, Stardust Racers is certainly unique, especially amongst the coasters at Universal Orlando Resort.
- Heavy-hitter IP anchors: The Harry Potter Ministry ride is the kind of headline attraction that pulls crowds like a magnet, and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is also home to some incredibly popular IP.
Â
The catch is that first-year operations can be messy. Epic Universe is still living in that space where:
- Wait times spike fast, especially for the top 3 to 4 rides.
- Downtime can hit at the worst possible moment (it’s not uncommon to walk across the park for a ride that is temporarily down. Or to waste time queueing for a ride that inevitably breaks down).
- Not all rides are super impressive – something I detail further in this post: 10 Most Surprising Things about the Universal Epic Universe Park [for better & worse]
I recently wrote a blog post comparing Epic Universe to Disney’s Magic Kingdom Park, where I listed the more impressive attractions among the Epic Universe lineup. This includes:
- Stardust Racers (Celestial Park): This oneâs for the thrill-seekers! As mentioned above, it’s a dual-launch coaster. If youâve ridden Jurassic World: Velocicoaster (at Universal Islands of Adventure), think of this as a slightly calmer cousin, still fast, just not quite as intense.
- Constellation Carousel (Celestial Park): A beautiful family carousel with a soft, dreamy feel. Instead of a simple circle, it swings through figure-8 patterns, which makes it unique. Itâs not the top ride in the park, but itâs unique, looks amazing in photos, and usually has one of the shortest waits at Epic Universe.
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (Dark Universe): Dr. Victoria Frankenstein decides to restart the family experiments and tries to control the monsters. Predictably, it goes sideways. Itâs not packed with jump scares, and won’t be terrifying for most people. (I’m a major scaredy cat who was dreading going on this ride, and even I found it decently tame and surprisingly enjoyable).
- Hiccupâs Wing Gliders (How to Train Your Dragon â Isle of Berk): A solid family coaster thatâs fun without being too much. Itâs a clear step down in intensity from Hagridâs Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (at Universal Islands of Adventure), so itâs a good pick for something lighter.
Animal Kingdom highlights: Flight of Passage, Everest, and the animal experiences Epic cannot copy
Despite being open for over 25 years, Animal Kingdom has less rides than the brand new Epic Universe. This includes these 7 rides (or just 6 from February 2nd, 2026):
- Avatar Flight of Passage (Pandora, The World of Avatar): A high-energy 3D simulator, screen-based attraction that âlinksâ you to a banshee and sends you flying over Pandora.
- DINOSAUR (DinoLand U.S.A., first day of permanent closure will be February 2nd, 2026): A dark, bumpy time-travel ride that drops you into a chaotic mission to bring back an Iguanodon.Â
- Expedition Everest, Legend of the Forbidden Mountain (Asia): A fast coaster with tight turns, big drops, and a run-in with the Yeti.Â
- Kali River Rapids (Asia): A whitewater raft ride with churning currents, with decently tame drops.
- Kilimanjaro Safaris (Africa): An open-air truck safari through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve where you can spot giraffes, elephants, lions, and more. No two rides are the same, thanks to the stars of the ride being real animals!
- Naâvi River Journey (Pandora, The World of Avatar): A slow, glowing boat ride through Pandoraâs bioluminescent forest.Â
- Wildlife Express Train (Africa, Rafikiâs Planet Watch): A short train ride that takes you out to Rafikiâs Planet Watch for animal care exhibits and quieter trails.
The standout rides at Animal Kingdom are (arguably):
- Avatar Flight of Passage – The screens seem a little old in the mid 2020s but it is a unique ride worth experiencing once. Just be aware that it often gets the highest wait times in the entire park.
- Expedition Everest –Â A coaster with a real sense of place. That mountain sells the story before you even get in line. It isn’t the fastest or scariest roller coaster in Orlando, but it’s great at storytelling.
- Kilimanjaro Safaris – Unique amongst Disney World’s rides, as it has tons of real animals.
RELATED POST: One Day at Animal Kingdom: The Top 5 Best Animal Kingdom Attractions to Prioritise in 2026
Animal Kingdom is home to a few stage shows, including:
- Feathered Friends in Flight!
- Festival of the Lion King
- Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!
Which park has better rides and shows?
Whilst quality is usually more important than quantity, Epic Universe wins on this one. When Dinosaur closes, it will have almost double the number of rides than Animal Kingdom.
And if you’re spending over $100 a day to visit a theme park, the more attractions, the more you experience, the better.
Sure, this could change with the new rides coming to Animal Kingdom in 2027 and beyond. But until then, Epic Universe wins this round.

It’s important to note that Universal is also working on bringing new rides to Epic Universe in the future too (potentially in the late 2020s / early 2030s, with exact timelines yet to be confirmed).
So we can’t expect Animal Kingdom to overtake Epic Universe on rides for the foreseeable future.
However, Animal Kingdom is better for shows. With a larger selection and a mix of shows with animals – real and movie characters – it’s a more interesting selection for guests.

That said, The Untrainable Dragon at Epic Universe is one of the best shows I’ve seen at a theme park, and is 100% worth watching!
In summary, Epic Universe is better for you (attraction-wise) if:
- You prefer thrill rides
- You don’t mind that they have slightly fewer stage shows than Animal Kingdom
- You don’t mind the higher wait times of the attractions
On the other hand, Animal Kingdom is better for you (attraction-wise) if:
- You care about seeing shows more/as much as rides
- You like the nature aspect of some of the rides
How long do you need to spend at each park?
Do you need a full day, a half-day, or multiple days to feel like you really experienced these parks?
Epic Universe: 1 full day minimum, 2-3 days if you hate rushing
If youâre asking, ‘How many days are needed at Epic Universe?’, I treat it like this: one day gets you the highlights, 2+ days gets you breathing room.
In 2025, Epic is still running on that newest-park energy, which usually means heavier crowds and more âweâll come back laterâ moments that donât work out.
If your goal is to do the big rides, explore each world, maybe watch a show, plan for a full day.
Hereâs my rule-of-thumb breakdown:
- 1 full day: Best for first-timers who want the major rides and a decent look at each world. On a day with moderate wait times and not too many breakdowns, you may be able to go on every ride. But as someone who visited Epic Universe for just one day in August 2025, I can attest to the fact that you can have a productive day, but it will feel rushed if you have a significant “to-do” list.
- 2+ days: Best if you want to re-ride, slow down for details, shop, and not feel too rushed.
Animal Kingdom: 1 day if you want the âwhole park,â half-day if you only want rides
Animal Kingdom has a reputation for being âhalf-day.â Sometimes thatâs true, but only if you treat it like a rides-only checklist. If you actually do the safari, hit a trail or two, and watch at least one show, the day fills up fast.
How I plan it:
- Half-day at Animal Kingdom: Works if your priorities are basically Flight of Passage, Everest, and safari, then you bounce.
- 1 full day: The sweet spot if you want rides plus animals plus a show, without feeling like youâre constantly checking the clock.
Unless you want to do everything more than once, you really don’t need to schedule more than one day at Animal Kingdom.
What changes the math: crowds, heat, and how your group âdoesâ theme parks
A few things that may impact how long you need at these parks include:
At Epic Universe
- Big wait time spikes for the top rides, especially as the day goes on.
- World-hopping adds walking, even when the park route looks simple on paper.
- First-year hiccups (downtime, delayed openings etc.)
At Animal Kingdom
- Animals are best earlier, which can shift your whole plan toward morning.
- Shows and trails arenât âquick.â Theyâre not hard, they just take time if you actually enjoy them.
- More limited opening hours, usually closing at or around 6 PM (sometimes later if there’s Extended Evening Hours for Deluxe Resort guests).
Generally, Animal Kingdom is a great choice if you don’t have much time.
You’ll often need more time at Epic Universe to fully experience it.
Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom Difference in Price: which Orlando park is cheaper and provides better value?
Ticket price basics: Epic Universe has a clear floor, Disney has date swings
One of the most important points of comparison when it comes to Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom is cost.
To get a comparison for this, I will compare the price range for 1 day tickets in 2026.
Minimum & Maximum Price of Epic Universe 1-Day Tickets (prices may be a little lower for Annual Passholders): Generally $139 – $199 + tax
Minimum & Maximum Price of Animal Kingdom 1-Day Tickets: Generally $119 – $184 + tax
The takeaway:
- Epic Universe: Often at least a little more expensive than Animal Kingdom.
- Animal Kingdom: Tends to be cheaper than Epic Universe, but also has less rides, so can be worse value for money when you take this into consideration.
The hidden âpriceâ: line-skipping and paid convenience
This is where people get surprised. A ticket is just the cover charge. The real question is whether youâre paying extra to avoid spending half your day in lines.
Epic Universe has Universalâs familiar ecosystem of paid upgrades (like Express options), and because itâs still running on new-park demand, the temptation to pay for convenience is strong. If you only have one day and you want the big rides, you might feel boxed into it.
The Universal Epic Universe cost of Express Passes is usually $160 – $330 + tax.
Animal Kingdom’s Lightning Lanes can offer a cheaper option, though it can certainly add up too:
- Lightning Lane Single Pass (for one-time use on Avatar Flight of Passage): Around $11 – $19 + tax, per person, per day.
- Lighting Lane MultiPass (can be used for multiple – but not all – attractions): Approximately $19 – $35 + tax, per person, per day.
- Lightning Lane Premier Pass (can be used once per day for each attraction that offers Lightning Lanes): About $129 – $199 + tax, per person, per day.
To be honest, if you hate waiting, both parks can become âexpensive parksâ, just in different ways.
Best âbang for your buckâ scenarios (based on how you travel)
Iâve noticed value depends less on the park and more on the type of trip youâre building.
Epic Universe tends to be better value if you’re:
- Prioritizing new rides and big IP lands
- Okay with planning my day like a tight schedule
- Pairing it with other Universal parks (multi-day tickets may make it more reasonable)
Animal Kingdom tends to be better value if you:
- Want a slightly slower-paced day that feels full without needing every second to be a ride
- Actually enjoy animals and shows (because thatâs where the park âpays you backâ)
Frequently Asked Questions about Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom
Is Epic Universe a success?
It appears to be successful so far. Of course, at of the time of publishing this post, we don’t have attendance figures for Epic Universe’s entire first year. And it appears that Universal has been capping attendance, as the park is new and learning how to operate, with rides gradually becoming more reliable.
Is Epic Universe good?
Yes, itâs good, but itâs also uneven, and thatâs what surprises people.
As of late 2025, Epic Universe has had mixed guest ratings on major review platforms (strong praise for some rides and theming, loud complaints about downtime, long waits, and mixed quality of rides).Â
If youâre trying to decide whether itâs âgoodâ for you, this is worth considering:
- If youâre attraction-first and love new stuff, Epic is absolutely worth doing at least once.
- If you hate friction (breakdowns, long lines, learning a new park layout), you might want to wait until the park settles.
- If you love Animal Kingdom for its calm, Epic can feel like the opposite of that, louder, shinier, and more go-go-go.
Is there a FastPass for Animal Kingdom?
Nope, FastPass is gone. Disney retired that system, so youâre not going to find the old free FastPass setup at Animal Kingdom (or any Disney World park).
What you do have now is Lightning Lanes, which is Disneyâs paid line-skipping option (availability and pricing can change by date and demand). More details discussed earlier in this post.
Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom VS Disney World other parks, which is the best?
Epic Universe is best for:
- people chasing the newest rides and big IP worlds
- guests who want a full day of “headline attractions”
- anyone who values âwowâ visuals over a slow pace
Animal Kingdom is best for:
- people who want a theme park day that feels like a place, not a checklist
- anyone who thinks a safari is a top-tier attraction (because it is)

What is the difference between Epic Universe and Universal Studios?
Epic Universe and Universal Studios Florida are two separate parks, and they feel like different eras of theme park design.
Universal Studios Florida is the more classic, âstudiosâ style park, you walk from area to area and bounce between shows, rides, and familiar franchises. Epic Universe was built all at once as a modern third gate, with that hub-and-portal structure and huge emphasis on fully immersive worlds.
Hereâs the simple way I explain it to friends:
- Universal Studios Florida: a greatest-hits album, with a mix of older and newer experiences.
- Epic Universe: the brand-new album with the big marketing push, and a very different sound.
If you want my deeper breakdown of where Universal Studios fits next to Epic, I wrote it in my recent post: Epic Universe VS Universal Studios Original Parks â Do You Need to Visit All 3 Universal Orlando Parks?
Epic Universe VS Islands of Adventure, which Universal park is better?
This one is spicy because Islands of Adventure has years of âproven greatnessâ on its side, and Epic has the new-park shine.
My honest answer: it depends on whether you want reliability or novelty.
- If you want a day full of tried and tested lands attractions, Islands of Adventure is hard to beat. It even has two of the most iconic roller coasters (which are both under 10 years old): Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World: VelociCoaster.
- If you want the newest big-ticket experiences and you donât mind a little first-year chaos, Epic Universe is the move.
Epic Universe VS Magic Kingdom, which is the better park?
Epic Universe is the better park if you want:
- modern ride systems,
- big franchise worlds,
- a day that feels like âthe newest thing in Orlando.â
Magic Kingdom is the better park when I want:
- the widest all-ages ride mix,
- the most iconic Disney atmosphere,
- that familiar, easy-to-love structure (lands, hub, classic castle park).

It’s basically impossible to establish the best theme park, but Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando is the most visited theme park in the world.
Final Thoughts on Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom
This Epic Universe VS Animal Kingdom battle really comes down to what kind of day you want to have.
Epic Universe is a good pick if you’re chasing the newest rides, big IP worlds, and that constant wow factor, even if the day feels louder and more plan-heavy.
Animal Kingdom is better if you’d prefer to see animals, fewer rides, more shows and a potentially calmer pace.
The best part is that neither park makes the other feel pointless; they are both unique and impressive parks.
Thanks for reading, and Iâd love to hear which one youâd pick first, and why.
