Disney Adventure World vs Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris: Is It Really an Upgrade?

DISNEY ADVENTURE WORLD

Disney Adventure World is opening soon at Disneyland Paris! But there’s one question on everyone’s mind: will it actually be better than Walt Disney Studios Park?

Disneyland Paris has is home to two parks. And the second gate has had a pretty wild journey, from bare-bones studio lot to a work-in-progress that will soon be rebranded as Disney Adventure World.

Today, we are looking at how Walt Disney Studios Park started, how it looks today, and what Disney says is coming next with the new Adventure World concept.

We will compare the current park to its future version, talk about what actually feels improved, and where things still look a bit cheap or half-done compared to the main Disneyland Park.

If you are trying to figure out how this new vision stacks up against the classic castle park, you might also like this deeper Disney Adventure World Paris vs Disneyland Paris comparison.

By the end, you should have a clear picture of how the second park has changed over time, what the rebrand could fix, and what still needs serious help for Disneyland Paris to feel like a true two-park resort.

This post is all about Disney Adventure World VS Walt Disney Studios, and if the re-brand will actually be an improvement.

Disney Adventure World

What is Disney Adventure World at Disneyland Paris?

Disney Adventure World is the new name and expanded vision for the current Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris.

Disney is re-theming large parts of the park, adding new lands, a central lake, and updated storytelling. The idea is to turn the park into a place where each area feels like a complete “world” based on popular Disney stories.

In short, it is not a brand-new park on new land. Instead, it is an upgraded and renamed version of Walt Disney Studios Park.

When will Walt Disney Studios Park officially become Disney Adventure World?

Disney announced in 2024 that Walt Disney Studios Park will take on the name Disney Adventure World as part of its ongoing expansion.

The first major new land tied to this project is the Frozen-themed area, built around a new lake. But this is just the start (we’ll discuss the other new and upcoming attractions later in this post!).

At the time of publishing this post, the park still operates under the name Walt Disney Studios Park, with some areas temporarily closed or under construction.

From Walt Disney Studios Park to Disney Adventure World: What Is Actually Changing?

If you have visited Walt Disney Studios Park in the past, you probably remember two things: the odd great individual attraction and a whole lot of empty, weird space (and some pretty bland rides).

The rebrand to Disney Adventure World is essentially Disney finally admitting that this park needs some serious help. 😂 It needs a new purpose.

This section looks at how the park started, why so many people saw it as the weak link, and what the new name tells us about the direction Disney is taking.

A Quick History of Walt Disney Studios Park and Why It Needed a Rethink

Walt Disney Studios Park opened on March 16, 2002, as the second gate at Disneyland Paris.

The theme was essentially to give guests a peek behind the scenes and see how films and TV are made.

If you know Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, that was the basic idea here too.

On paper, that sounds fun. In practice, it gave us:

  • Soundstage boxes instead of immersive lands
  • A short attraction list that felt like a half-built park
  • Primarily rides that felt “cheap” and not to Disney standards.

Walt Disney Studios Park has long been called one of Disney’s weakest efforts, and fan sites and forums have not been kind about the early years.

Over the past 20+ years, plenty of Disneyland Paris guests skipped the Studios entirely or only treated it as a half-day add-on, not a must-do park.

It has always been viewed as the smaller, less impressive park to Disneyland Park – the original park at Disneyland Paris.

You can see this in how often people rank it near the bottom of Disney park lists or mention the lack of atmosphere when talking about Disneyland Paris overall.

Over time, Disney tried to plug the holes with big single attractions instead of fixing the core layout. Crush’s Coaster, Tower of Terror, Ratatouille, then Avengers Campus.

Each one helped, but the park still feels like a patchwork of movie ideas: some Toon Studio here, some Marvel there, leftover backlot stuff in the middle.

The main complaints have stayed pretty consistent:

    • Weak theming in the central areas, especially around the old Backlot
    • Confusing identity, with “behind the scenes” ideas sitting next to weakly themed lands
    • Short visit time, because there just was not enough to do
  • DISNEY ADVENTURE WORLD Paris
    • Considerable wait times – for the few good attractions that everyone was flocking to.

So when Disney announced that the park would get a long-term transformation, it finally gave us hope that this park may actually become the great park it deserves to be!

What the Disney Adventure World name tells us about the new direction

Names matter at Disney. “Studios Park” tells you to expect soundstages, sets, and maybe some fake city streets. “Disney Adventure World” says something completely different.

The new name leans into adventure, exploration, and Disney story worlds, not production stages. It lines up with what Disney has announced so far for the park’s future: bigger, IP lands wrapped around a central lake, each tied to a specific story universe.

Sadly, Walt Disney’s name is being swapped out for a generic name (which will easily be confused with Disney World and Disney California Adventure), but this is hardly surprising if you’ve paid any attention to Disney leadership over the last 5-10+ years.

So what does that actually change for you as a guest?

You can expect:

  • Fewer generic studio sets, more IP lands
Think Arendelle, Marvel, not so many random warehouse facades.
  • Stronger storytelling from the entrance onward
The park is being reshaped so that walking in feels like the start of a journey through different adventures, instead of stepping onto a leftover backlot that only gets interesting once you reach the few big rides.
  • Potentialy a more complete, full-day park
Disney is clearly aiming for Disney Adventure World to stand next to Disneyland Park as a real second option, not a quick bonus. New attractions, shows, restaurants, and shops around the lake should make it easier to spend a full day without running out of things to do.

Some parts of the old Studios will still be there, but with new context:

  • Avengers Campus, which opened in 2022, will stay and slot in nicely under the “adventure” umbrella. Superheroes saving the day fits this new branding much better than “backlot stunt show” ever did.
  • Pixar Toon-inspired areas and family rides are remaining.
  • Studio One (which was often described as a bland “soundstage” entrance) being updated to World Premiere, leading you into the worlds of the movies.

New Lands & Attractions at Disneyland Paris

World of Frozen

World of Frozen is the big, flashy centerpiece of the Disney Adventure overhaul.

It opens with the reimagined park on March 29, 2026, before lots of the other upcoming additions.

According to Disney’s own announcements, like the official update on World of Frozen and Disney Adventure World’s opening date, the land brings:

  • The Arendelle village with the castle (even though this isn’t a typical “castle” Magic Kingdom-style Disney park).
  • A large central lake that ties into the wider park
  • The Frozen Ever After boat ride (which looks like a new and improved version of the original at Epcot, Walt Disney World, most similar to the version at Hong Kong Disneyland).
  • Frozen-themed dining, shopping, and character meet spaces

What the Disneyland Paris Frozen Ever After Ride will feel like

🚨*potential spoiler alert* ‼️

Frozen Ever After is not a wild coaster. It is a slow-moving, story-focused boat ride that builds on the version at EPCOT in Florida.

DISNEY ADVENTURE WORLD opening date
Frozen Ever After at Walt Disney World Resort

You board a boat, float through detailed scenes from Arendelle, and meet Anna, Elsa, Olaf, and friends with modern Audio-Animatronics and projection effects.

If you want a sense of the ride style, the original version at EPCOT is described as a boat ride based on the hit movie, for all ages and heights.

  • Gentle forward and backward sections
  • A couple of small drops, not a big plunge
  • Set pieces that surround you with ice, snow, and music

Frozen Ever After is a kind of enchanting ride, rather than an attraction that provides an adrenaline rush.

That is exactly what this park has been missing, a richly themed family attraction that feels like a proper anchor.

Whilst there are plenty of slow-moving boat rides at Disneyland Paris (think “it’s a small world”, Pirates of the Caribbean etc.), this is the first of its kind at Walt Disney Studios/Disney Adventure World.

Why the lake (Disney Adventure Bay) actually matters

When you go to Adventure Way, a brand new area with shopping, dining and attractions opening on March 29th, 2026, you’ll also find Adventure Bay – the massive lake.

The big artificial lake which can be seen in World of Frozen is not just there to look pretty in marketing photos. It changes how the entire park works.

A central lake can:

  • Create better sightlines – something that has not been great historically at Walt Disney Studios Park.
  • Support nighttime shows, with fountains, projections, and lighting. Disney has already teased “Disney Cascade of Lights” as a new nighttime show spread across the water.
  • Give the park a real hub and gorgeous “centerpiece”.

Raiponce Tangled Spin

The new Tangled-themed ride is opening with World of Frozen on March 29th, 2026, which will hopefully help with capacity issues this park may experience from increased demand.

This ride is a spinning attraction set in the iconic lantern scene from Tangled. Think somewhere between teacups and a gentle whirl, but with golden light and purple banners instead of pastel Fantasyland vibes.

Whilst it’s great that there will be another kid-friendly ride in this park, it’s a shame it’s another cheap and uninspired addition. Did we really need another generic spinning ride? Especially as we already have Cars Quatre Roues Rallye – another spinning ride at Walt Disney Studios Park.

And if you were hoping for a deeply-themed Tangled ride – like Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival at Tokyo DisneySea with great storytelling, this isn’t it. At all.

The Lion King Land & Attraction

The Lion King attraction is the most mysterious of the new projects, and potentially has the highest potential of all the new additions to Disney Adventure World.

Sadly, details are sparse, meaning that the opening date probably isn’t in the foreseeable future.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • There will be a water attraction (supposedly similar to Splash Mountain or Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at other Disney Parks around the world).
  • There will be dining and shopping locations
  • And yes, you will be able to meet iconic characters from The Lion King!

For more details, check out this post.

Of course, there is always a risk that budget cuts trim the details of this land or scale back the animatronics featured in the ride.

(After all, that appeared to happen to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Walt Disney World and Disneyland in California).

If Disney goes all in, though, this could be the new area that finally stops people from calling the second park a half-day park (especially when World of Frozen and The Lion King area are both open).

UP Ride

And just when you were starting to think that Disneyland Paris has too many spinning rides …

Guess what the Disney Pixar UP attraction will be?

A roller coaster? A dark ride? A boat ride?

No! It is “a flying carousel”. Also known as a glorified ride with park swings.

The only foreseeable pro is that you should be able to get a pretty view of Disney Adventure World.

But it looks like a replica of the Silly Symphony Swings at Disney California Adventure Park.

Theming, Dining & Entertainment at Disney Adventure World

Theming, food, and entertainment: Turning a basic park into a place you want to linger

As we’ve already established right now, a lot of people treat Walt Disney Studios Park as a half-day park.

The plan for Disney Adventure World tries to fix that in three big ways: stronger theming, better food, and more entertainment in the streets and on the lake.

More IP & (arguably) theming

The current studios layout still has long stretches of bare paths and basic facades. It feels more like you are walking between industrial units than story worlds.

The future design leans into:

  • A proper adventure-focused entrance avenue, lined with better-themed facades instead of bare soundstages.
  • A central lake with views of Arendelle and other new attractions.
  • Distinct lands that each feel like their own mini-destination, not loose movie references.

Food that fits each land

Food is a huge mood-setter. Right now, a lot of Studios dining feels like “theme park default.” Functional, but not memorable.

And most importantly, less interesting than the food at Disneyland Park, for the most part.

Disney Adventure World is built to do the opposite.

You can expect:

  • Arendelle-style dishes and treats around World of Frozen.
  • Princess dining experience – The Regal View table-service restaurant, where you can meet Disney Princesses (opening on May 29th, 2026).
  • & More – Disney has confirmed that there will be 14-15 new dining locations at Disney Adventure World, helping to solve the lack of options at this park.

Disney Adventure World Nighttime entertainment that justify staying late

The new show, Disney Cascade of Lights, will include:

  • Water fountains, projections, and music across the lake.
  • Iconic scenes from films like Frozen, The Lion King, and maybe future additions.
  • Viewing spots all around the shore, so you are not crushed into one tiny plaza.

Long Term Potential: What Still Needs To Happen After Disney Adventure World Opens

Disney Adventure World is expected to feel like a huge “glow-up” compared to old Walt Disney Studios Park, but it is not the final version of the park.

Let’s talk about what is still missing once the first wave opens, and what Disney Adventure World needs over the long term to really catch up.

Lessons from other Disney Parks and How Paris Can Catch Up

If you want a preview of how disney adventure world might grow up, you only have to look at another infamous second gate that started weak and slowly found their footing.

Disney has done this before, sometimes painfully. Hopefully, Disney Adventure World can learn from that without repeating every mistake.

Disney California Adventure: Hollywood Horror Story to a Solid Park

When Disney California Adventure opened in 2001, people roasted it. Feeling too cheap, not enough rides, confused identity. Sound familiar?

Over the next decade, Disney tried to fix it with a few clear moves:

  • They spent real money on one huge signature land, Cars Land, that instantly changed the park’s image.
  • They reworked the entrance and core areas to feel more like a place, less like a mall.
  • They kept adding, from new shows to re-themed areas, until the whole park felt bigger and more thoughtful.
  • They re-themed Paradise Pier to Pixar Pier (I don’t think adding IP made this area feel higher-quality, but that’s what they did).

Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure

Disney Adventure World is at the “add the big signature thing” stage right now. World of Frozen is its Cars Land moment. The lake and Lion King additions help, but the real test will be:

  • Does Disney keep investing hard in years 5 to 10, or does it stop after this wave?
  • Do they fix the remaining weak spots, like the transitions and leftover studio bones, the way DCA did?

How Disneyland Paris can actually catch up, step by step

Over the next 5 to 10 years, here is what could move Disney Adventure World from “massive improvement” to “great second gate.”

  1. Finish phase one properly
Frozen, the lake, Adventure Way, Lion King, and the flat rides all need full detail. No bare rock, minimal obvious cost-cutting, and a real push on nighttime entertainment and food. If this opening wave feels subpar, it becomes much harder to sell the next wave as “worth the wait.”
  2. Upgrade what still feels “cheap Studios”
Once the shiny stuff arrives, the old flaws will stand out more. That includes:

    • Any leftover bare plazas or boxy facades.
    • Transitional areas that still scream “backlot.”
    • Rides that feel like simple fillers instead of part of a full story.
  3. & Hope This is Enough to Compete with Universal Studios Britain

As I explained further in my previous post, Universal Studios Britain has a projected opening year of 2031. So, Disneyland Paris will have competition!

Frequently Asked Questions about Disney Adventure World

Is Disney Adventure World a third park at Disneyland Paris?

No. Disney Adventure World is not a third gate.

It is the new identity of the existing second park, Walt Disney Studios Park, located right next to Disneyland Park and Disney Village. The resort will still have:

  • Disneyland Park
  • Disney Adventure World (current Walt Disney Studios Park, renamed)

So you will still be visiting a two-park resort, just with a much more immersive second park.

Will my existing Disneyland Paris tickets still work when it becomes Disney Adventure World?

Yes. If you have a ticket or annual pass that includes Walt Disney Studios Park, it will still give you access once the park is called Disney Adventure World.

Disney typically keeps ticket types simple across name changes. What matters is whether your ticket includes:

  • 1 park per day (you choose which park)
  • 2 parks per day (Park Hopper style access)

If it includes the second park, you are covered, regardless of whether the park is called Walt Disney Studios Park or Disney Adventure World at the time of your visit.

Will Disney Adventure World be good for young kids or is it mostly for older guests?

Disney Adventure World is being designed for a wide age range, not just teens and adults.

Families with young kids can expect:

  • Character meet-and-greets, including Marvel and Pixar favorites
  • Shows and walk-through areas with strong visuals and music
  • A Frozen-inspired land that will be especially fun for kids who love the films

Some attractions will still be more intense or height-restricted, like Crush’s Coaster, for example, but the park as a whole should feel more welcoming for families than the older “studio lot” version of the park.

RELATED POST: 5 Intense Disneyland Paris Roller Coaster Rides that are (WAY) Scarier Than You Would Think

How will Disney Adventure World connect to Disneyland Park and Disney Village?

The basic layout of the resort stays the same. Disney Adventure World uses the same entrance area that Walt Disney Studios Park uses today.

You will still be able to:

  • Walk from Disneyland Park to Disney Adventure World in just a few minutes
  • Visit Disney Village between or after park visits
  • Reach both parks easily from the Disneyland Paris train station and bus area

How will construction for Disney Adventure World affect my trip right now?

If you visit during the transformation period, you may see:

  • Construction walls and cranes in some parts of the park
  • Certain paths or attractions temporarily closed
  • Noise or limited views in the back of the park where new lands are growing

On the positive side, many core attractions, like Avengers Campus and popular rides in the Studio side of the park, stay open. Disney usually posts closures in advance, so it pays to:

  • Check the “Attractions” section on the Disneyland Paris site or app
  • Look at your must-do rides and shows, then plan your day around what is open

If you care about seeing the park in its “finished” state, you might want to visit after the new lake and Frozen area open.

RELATED POST: Should You Wait for World of Frozen Disneyland Paris to Open Before You Visit DLP? – Updated for 2026

Should I plan a full day for Disney Adventure World once the changes are complete?

Yes, planning a full day for Disney Adventure World is a good idea once the expanded version is open.

Right now, many guests are able to cover the current Walt Disney Studios Park in less than a full day, especially outside peak season. As new lands and shows come online, the park will have:

  • More attractions and areas to explore
  • More entertainment spread across the day
  • Better food and dining choices in themed settings

If you are booking a future trip timed around the new openings, scheduling one full day per park is a solid starting point, then adding extra days if you like a slower pace.

But of course, if you have 2 Parks Per Day tickets, you don’t have to dedicate an entire day to Disney Adventure World, if you’re not sure if there’s enough attractions to keep you entertained all day!

Final Thoughts on Disney Adventure World

Disney Adventure World is shaping up to be the version of the second park that Walt Disney Studios Park always wanted (and needed) to be but never quite pulled off.

We will hopefully get a clearer identity built around adventure, richer lands like World of Frozen and Avengers Campus, a better mix of rides for different ages, and a park layout that finally feels like somewhere you want to spend a full day instead of racing back to the castle park.

The big question now is how far Disney will keep pushing things after this first wave, so feel free to share your hopes, worries, and wish-list ideas for the next phase, because this shift is a real chance for Disneyland Paris to finally give both of its parks equal attention (and hopefully, quality).

This post was all about Disney Adventure World VS Walt Disney Studios, and if the re-brand will actually be an improvement.
